WHAT MAKES A POSITIVELY PLANTAIN TORTILLA?
We'll give you a hint: 2 of the ingredients are probably in your pantry!
Don't get us wrong, We love our pink Himalayan sea salt. but when it comes to nutrition, Celtic sea salt is the way to go (in our humble opinion). The sodium content is lower in Celtic and the magnesium is higher. The phosphorous and potassium are slightly higher in Celtic salt as well! And if you haven't guessed by now, we're all about using the most nutrient dense ingredients!
Our Main Ingredient: whole, green plantains. Whole foods are rich in phytochemicals, which are powerful nutrients found in plant foods. Compared to processed foods, whole foods contain more vitamins and minerals, and more fiber and beneficial fats. The combinations of nutrients in whole plant foods act synergistically to protect us from disease.
We use high QUALITY baking powder in our Positively Plantain tortillas. Our baking powder is gluten-free, aluminum-free, corn-free, grain-free, allergen-free, non-GMO, kosher certified and has no artificial additives. Pretty stellar stuff that makes our tortillas fluffy and pliable so they won’t rip when you load up on your favorite fillings!
The Positively Plantain Difference
Plantains VS Other Gluten-Free Options
So why use plantains when there are so many other options to make a tortilla?
Tortillas are traditionally made with flour or corn, but as anyone with Celiac’s disease (when one is unable to process gluten) or any type of auto-immune disorder will tell you, these ingredients are a no-go.
While living a vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free lifestyle has many advantages, there are some disadvantages, particularly relating to vitamin deficiencies. Wheat flour is fortified with folic acid, B vitamins and iron. We at Positively Plantain get pretty excited when it comes to tortillas made from green plantains. You see, most gluten-free flours, pasta, tortillas etc., are considered specialty foods that do not have to follow enrichment rules. They are often made with ingredients with very little nutritional value, like potato starch, cornstarch, tapioca starch and white rice flour. Eating foods made with these ingredients means you might be missing out on some vitamins and minerals, like Vitamin B6 and Magnesium.
That’s where whole foods like green plantains come in to give us the nutrition we might be lacking! At Positively Plantain, we don’t need to fortify our tortillas with vitamins and minerals because they have more Vitamin A, C, B6 and Magnesium per tortilla than the leading brands sold on the market today (gluten-filled and gluten-free alike). All this nutrition while staying free of the 14 most common allergens.
